Current Research Interests

Our research covers a wide range of topics at the interface of materials science, surface physics and chemistry, with the aim of understanding molecular processes at surfaces at a molecular and even atomic level. In the framework of the thematic focus “Surface-supported supramolecular nanostructures” we follow different experimental approaches towards achieving generally applicable principles of nanostructured device fabrication and function. Our core activity in this field is surface physical and chemical investigations – in particular by means of ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and photoelectron-based methods such as XPS, UPS and XPD –  of the fabrication, mechanisms and functionalities of self-assembled supramolecular nanostructures at solid surfaces. In this strongly interdisciplinary field of research, we closely collaborate with synthetic chemists and specialists in theory and modelling.
